Two years on from their self-titled debut album, Cigarettes After Sex have returned with details of their sophomore record, Cry.

The New York band dropped the lead single ‘Heavenly’ from the forthcoming album on Annie Mac’s BBC Radio 1 show on Thursday night. The presenter branded it the “hottest record in the world” ahead of it’s UK premiere.

Frontman Greg Gonzalez said that the new single was “inspired by the overwhelming beauty I felt watching an endless sunset on a secluded beach in Latvia one summer night…

Heavenly’ opens with a smooth bassline and a synth sound-effect before Gonzalez begins to sing about being head-over-heels in love.

It’s a heartwarming single that sets a mood as he sings about wanting to be embraced and affectionate, while seeking assurance that this is real:

Touch me with a kiss, feel me on your lips… when you are above, feeling it still, tell me it’s love, tell me it’s real…”.

This album has been described by the band as more like a film, than a typical record. Gonzalez explained that this was due to the band recording Cry in the stunning surroundings Mallorca. The new record sticks to the theme of romance, beauty and sexuality. The Cigarettes After Sex frontman explained:

Ultimately, I view this record as a film. It was shot in this stunning, exotic location, and it stitches all these different characters and scenes together, but in the end is really about romance, beauty & sexuality. It’s a very personal telling of what those things mean to me.

Cigarettes After Sex revealed that Cry will be released on October 25th, via Partisan Records.
