Review: We Are Scientists – Megaplex

We Are Scientists are back with their sixth studio album, Megaplex. Our verdict is in on the follow-up to 2016’s Helter Seltzer.

The Californian duo are back with their sixth record and are set to hit the road later this year across the UK and Ireland. Megaplex sees We Are Scientists return with 10 new tracks for us to feast our ears on.

Kicking off with the lead single, ‘One In, One Out’ is an emphatic start with a piercing beat and searing guitars, invoking the emotions as frontman Kieran Murray sings of falling head over heels: “I fall in love at least once every night”. Or on the chorus when he reveals his vulnerability: “it’s why I stopped right where I stood, when I saw you…”. It’s an empassionate start to the album and sets the tone for the rest of the record.

Megaplex is littered with gorgeous melodies and moments that make it hard to just keep still while listening. As they create sun-soaked vibes on ‘Notes In a Bottle’ and ‘Properties of Perception’, with summer approaching, they’ll make great additions to those holiday playlists.

Still with that electro-pop vibe across the record, We Are Scientists still show us why we fell in love with them, even when they focus on darker themes like on ‘You Failed’.

A standout moment to be excited for is halfway through Megaplex, when ‘No Wait At Five Leaves’ comes on. It catches you off guard after the laid back ‘KIT’, it begins with a fast tempo and the melody instills the uplifting spirit that dominates the album. A song about persevering in the face of adversity, Murray sings with a sense of urgency and conviction: “believe involves a change of scene, it all comes true eventually. Though patience is key…”. Along with a passionate chorus, this should fit nicely alongside other fan favourites.

It’s a record that should raise spirits and get you up and dancing. With plenty of fun moments throughout Megaplex, they still tug the heartstrings with the emotional ‘Now or Never’ or ‘You Failed’.

Packed with catchy hooks and infectious melodies, it’s a welcomed return for We Are Scientists.

Verdict: 7.5/10
